Climate resilient agroforestry in the Bolivian lowlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trees for All has supported our partner Sicirec’s ArBolivia<\/a> project since 2008. In Bolivia, we help farmers switch to sustainable agroforestry. This is an alternative to traditional agriculture and cattle breeding in which a lot of forest is lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers receive support to plant indigenous trees, in combination with coffee, cocoa and other crops. In this way, we restore degraded soils and ensure that the land becomes fertile again. As a result, people can continue to live in the area and all kinds of plant and animal species return. Moreover, agroforestry provides better incomes for farmers. This project thus contributes to a better climate, more biodiversity and better living conditions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is the ArBolivia project needed? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the last few decades, the landscape and land use in the Bolivian lowlands has changed drastically. Due to the closure of mines in the highlands, many Bolivians lost their jobs. The government encouraged them to move to the lowlands to start farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These so-called highlanders were not familiar with their new environment. For this reason, they employed farming methods that were not fit for the lowlands. Slowly but surely, more deforestation took place to create space for livestock. Moreover, many farmers of old were used to growing a single crop, such as cassava, rice, coffee or citrus. Because of such monoculture plantations the soil gets depleted and the risk of (insect) plagues increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequences for humankind, animals and nature are vast. Because of the disappearance of forest, the soil washes away easily. Various plants and animals have lost their habitat. Lastly, the farmers find themselves in a precarious financial situation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
